On March 9, a workshop entitled “Translational and Precision Medicine at the Time of AI, Advanced Technology and Digital Revolution” was held at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, promoted by the HEAL Italia Foundation. In the presence of the Rector of the University, Prof. Nathan Levialdi Ghiron, Prof. Eleonora Candi, Coordinator of Spoke 1 of the Extended Partnership project, together with Prof. Giuseppe Sica, introduced the theme of the workshop and the speakers. The event featured presentations by Prof. Mauro Piacentini, Scientific Director of HEAL Italia; Prof. Gerry Melino, Coordinator of the Foundation’s International Board; and Prof. Giuseppe Novelli, member of Spoke 1 of the PE6 project. The international dimension of the workshop was further highlighted by the presentation delivered by Prof. Frederic Ris.

The topics discussed focused on the growing role that artificial intelligence (AI) is playing in the development of translational medicine and precision medicine, profoundly transforming the way patients are studied, diagnosed, and treated. The primary objective of translational medicine is to rapidly transfer discoveries from basic research into clinical practice, thereby reducing the gap between laboratory findings and patient care. In this context, AI represents a powerful tool for analyzing large volumes of biological and clinical data, enabling the identification of complex patterns that would be difficult to detect using traditional methods. At the same time, precision medicine aims to tailor therapeutic strategies based on the individual characteristics of each patient, including genetic profile, molecular biomarkers, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Through machine learning and deep learning techniques, AI is capable of integrating and interpreting data from multiple sources—such as genomics, proteomics, medical imaging, and electronic health records—thus enabling the development of predictive models useful for early diagnosis, patient stratification, and the selection of the most effective treatments.

Moreover, the use of AI accelerates the process of drug discovery and development, facilitating the identification of new therapeutic targets and the design of candidate molecules. This approach not only reduces the time and costs associated with research but also increases the likelihood of success in clinical trials. Overall, the integration of artificial intelligence, translational medicine, and precision medicine represents one of the most promising developments in contemporary biomedicine. Through advanced data analysis and increasingly accurate predictive models, AI is contributing to making medicine more predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory, opening new perspectives for improving treatment effectiveness and patients’ quality of life. Of particular interest was the presentation by Prof. Giuseppe Novelli on the “Predictive and Personalized Medicine Clinic (MPP)”, established at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” within the framework of the Extended Partnership project coordinated by the HEAL Italia Foundation. The center is dedicated to genetic analysis and genetic counseling for individuals who wish to understand their risk of developing hereditary diseases, with the aim of improving prevention strategies. The workshop attracted a large audience, both in person and online, highlighting the strong interest in the topics discussed.
